Modern modular coming to Denver

Colorado is a prime market for modular construction. The high cost of labor and inclement weather have even influenced some major builders to build at least part of their homes in a factory setting. On problem however, is that these homes are tradition Colonial designs, not modern ones. This is about to change.

Michelle Kaufmann, designer of the factory constructed Sunset Breezehouse & Glidehouse, has secured a relationship with a local and respected modular builder. I've been a big fan of MKD projects, but never seriously considered one because the factory was located in British Columbia. Now, these homes will be available from a construction site here on the Front Range.

Currently three of my favorite modern homes are on the market. First is the Sculpted House. Any trip through Genesee on I-70 nearly guarantees a peek at this Colorado landmark. Originally built in the mid 1960's by architect Charles Deaton, this home was recently finished with a 5,000 sq foot addition for a grand total of 7,644 "round" feet. Rollie Jordan of Kentwood Cherry Creek has the online tour.

Another great example is 456 Washington ST in the Alamo Placita neighborhood. Designed and built by Semple Brown, this home was a COBRA award winner for best residential architecture in Colorado. Dee Chirafisi of Kentwood City has an online tour for this property.

Finally, a classic example of Mid-century Modern is listed in Arapahoe Acres at 1421 E. Cornell PL. In a neighborhood of modern homes, this example has had many updates without losing the character of the home.
